  1. Hi Kris! This was very interesting discovery today to find someone with my surname in Swiss yellow pages. Needed to google your name and came across your blog. Turns out that you are actually related with Latvia. Maybe you would be interested to meet up some time for a coffee? It would be great cause how far i know pretty much everyone with this surname in Latvia are my relatives. Anyway, if you are interested, let me know! Zanne

  2. Hi Kris!

Thanks for such a nice photos of white snails hanging on the grass (taken in Provence)! I’ve finally found a description of that weird behaviour – it’s called aestivation – see this Wiki page:

    • Thanks for sharing Jan! Now that I read the definition it makes sense: hibernating through the hot, dry summer. Cheers,

  3. Hi Kris My name is Susan Terauds. I live in Australia with my husband Guntis and believe you are related to him. His father was Karlis Terauds a brother of Ausma. Karlis moved to Australia in the 50’s along with his brother Emils Stals. It was with great interest that I read your blog in relation to your visit to Latvia we are planning on going in August this year. As my husbands father died when he was quite young he doesnt know alot about his family in Latvia, he did meet his cousin Janis from Canada in about 2000 when he came to Australia. Any tips on travelling to Latvia and meeting any relatives would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards

    • Dear Susan,

Yes I am definitely related to your husband! My grandfather was Karlis’s and Emils’s brother, Janis, who immigrated to Canada in 1948 with his wife Tatjana and their four children (at the time), Janis, Juris, Aija and Ieva. My grandparents had three more children in Canada, including my mother Marianna. Your husband must have met my eldest uncle Janis, who passed away in 2004. I know that my mother Marianna has also connected with some relatives in Australia – perhaps other cousins of your husband’s – during her visits to my brother, who lives in Brisbane.

As for travelling in Latvia this August, does this mean your husband is joining the big gathering that my uncle Juris has organised? I will be travelling there with my family as well and I understand Juris has recruited many of the cousins from my generation. If so, I can not give you any travel tips that will serve better than having Juris as a tour guide. He speaks Latvian, returns annually to oversee the family properties that he has reassembled in his name, and will undoubtedly arrange everything for this summer’s gathering.

Happy to make this connection and to continue our conversation, electronically in hopefully in Latvia in August as well!

      Best regards,
